Two of the most credible humanoid platforms now in or approaching residential deployment. We have read each, as we would a candidate for a position in a great household, against a single question, what would be required of them on the first evening of service.
The 1X NEO, built by the Norwegian-American firm 1X Technologies, is the first humanoid offered to private buyers in the West. The Tesla Optimus Gen 2 is, at this writing, the most publicly demonstrated. Both can stand, walk, see, and grasp. Each has been filmed handling tasks that would have seemed unthinkable five years prior.
The household, however, judges by different criteria. A principal does not engage staff for the load they can lift. They engage for the manner in which a guest is received, the bearing maintained during a difficult conversation, and the composure with which an unexpected request is handled at 11:30 in the evening.
The question is not which humanoid is more capable. The question is which is more suited to the room.
What follows is not a buyer's guide. It is a brief, prepared for the engineering teams and household principals who must decide which platform to invite past the threshold.

Neither the NEO nor the Optimus, in their factory configuration, knows when to withdraw. Neither has been instructed in the choreography of refilling a glass without interrupting a sentence. Neither has been taught that a misplaced confidence, overheard between principals, is to be unheard.
These are not deficiencies of perception or grasp. They are absences of instruction, the kind a young valet receives, over years, in a great house. They cannot be engineered into existence. They must be taught.
This is the layer Maison Protocol licenses, platform-agnostic, to the manufacturers who will define the next generation of humanoid presence.
On the evidence available in mid-2026, the 1X NEO is the platform best suited to the residence as it stands today, quieter, lighter, available, designed from the outset for the occupied room. The Optimus Gen 2 is, by some measures, the more dexterous instrument, and its trajectory should not be underestimated.
Either, properly instructed, may in time become a credible presence at the door. The instruction is the work that remains.
